What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both are plain-text subtitle files with a start time, an end time and the text of each caption. SRT (SubRip) numbers every caption and uses a comma before the milliseconds (00:00:01,000). WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT line, uses a dot (00:00:01.000), makes the numbers optional and adds options for position and styling. Web browsers only play WebVTT natively, which is why web video players ask for .vtt files.

Good to know before you convert

  • The timing doesn’t change: only the format around it does.
  • Bold, italic and underline tags are kept. SRT font-color tags are removed because WebVTT doesn’t support them.
  • Characters WebVTT reserves, like a lone "&" or "<", are escaped so the file stays valid.
  • Turn on "Keep the cue numbers" if your player or workflow needs an identifier on each caption.
  • Captions out of sync? Fix the timing first with the subtitle shifter, then convert.

A converter that checks your file

Valid WebVTT Output

Adds the WEBVTT header, switches the millisecond comma to a dot and escapes characters WebVTT doesn’t allow, so players accept the file.

Forgiving Parser

Reads files with missing numbers, missing blank lines, Windows or Mac line endings, a byte order mark or one- and two-digit milliseconds.

Error Report

Tells you which blocks were skipped, which captions ended before they started and which overlap, before you publish.

Nothing Uploaded

Your browser reads and converts the file. It never touches a server, so private or unreleased content stays private.
