Submagic alternatives: the short answer

Short answer
It depends on what you miss in Submagic. Longer videos on a cheap plan, auto-placed sound effects and voice dubbing: StoryCut. Clips from long videos: Opus Clip. A free full editor on any device: CapCut. A Submagic-like tool with a "Hormozi" preset for less: ZapCap. Editing by transcript on desktop: Descript.
Submagic’s prices
Starter $19/mo or $12/mo billed yearly (15 videos a month, up to 2 minutes each, 1080p). Pro $39/mo or $23/mo yearly (40 videos, up to 5 minutes). Business $69/mo or $41/mo yearly (100 videos, up to 30 minutes, 4K). Free trial: 3 short videos with a watermark.
Not in those prices
Magic Clips (long video to clips) is a paid add-on, listed at $19/mo for 10 uploads in Submagic’s help center. Seats are billed per member. Submagic’s help center says it does not offer refunds.
What Submagic does well
Fast captions, a large template library and an established brand: 4.5 on Trustpilot from 844 reviews (checked October 3, 2026).
StoryCut
AI captions in 49 languages with 26 styles, including 6 Hormozi-style presets. Starter is $7/mo billed yearly ($9/mo monthly) for videos up to 7 minutes in 1080p without a watermark. Auto sound effects, voice dubbing and eye contact on Pro, with 1 free eye contact try. Web only.

Why do people look for a Submagic alternative?

The most common complaints about Submagic are about billing and limits, not its captions. The first limit is length: Starter caps each video at 2 minutes and Pro at 5 minutes, so anything longer needs Business at $69/mo ($41/mo billed yearly). The second is volume: Starter includes 15 videos a month and Pro 40. Turning a long video into clips needs Magic Clips, a paid add-on on top of your plan. On billing, Submagic’s help center states that it does not offer refunds, and renewal charges are the most common theme in its 1-star Trustpilot reviews. Some features are missing: sound effects are added by hand, caption by caption, and there is no native mobile app. The free trial covers 3 short videos with a watermark. To be fair, reviewers also praise Submagic for the time it saves, its transcription and its style library, and most of its Trustpilot reviews are 5 stars.

The alternatives, one by one

StoryCut

StoryCut

Best for: longer videos, auto sound effects and dubbing

A web-based caption editor. Captions start on their own after upload, in 49 languages and 26 styles, including 6 Hormozi-style presets and a MrBeast-style one. Starter ($7/mo billed yearly) exports 1080p without a watermark for videos up to 7 minutes. Pro ($14/mo billed yearly) adds AI-placed sound effects, magic zoom, clean audio, AI music, voice dubbing in 33 languages and eye contact correction (10 videos a month), and every account gets 1 free eye contact try. AI clips from long videos are in every plan. No mobile app, no API and no social posting.

StoryCut Editor
Opus Clip

Opus Clip

Best for: finding clips in long videos

Opus Clip’s core product cuts long videos into clips and gives each one a virality score. It has iOS and Android apps and auto-posting from Starter ($15/mo, monthly only); Pro ($14.50/mo billed yearly) adds auto sound effects, dubbing in 25 languages, 4K and API access. It has no eye contact correction, and the free plan is watermarked.

Captions

Captions

Best for: editing on iPhone with generative AI

Captions (now by Mirage) has a 4.7-star iPhone app (38,220 App Store ratings) with AI Edit, eye contact, dubbing in 31 languages plus Lipdub lip-sync, and AI avatars. Basic costs $9.99/mo and Max $24.99/mo. Everything runs on credits, which are spent even if you don’t export, and some features, including eye contact, are missing from the new web app.

CapCut

CapCut

Best for: a free full editor on every device

CapCut is a complete timeline editor on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and the web, free to use, with a huge template library. Its mobile app has AI sound effects and eye contact. Pro costs $19.99/mo or $179.99/yr after a 2026 price increase, prices vary by region, and using Pro assets on the free plan adds a watermark. You do the editing yourself.

VEED

Best for: a general browser editor with subtitles

VEED is a full video editor in the browser, with unlimited auto subtitles on paid plans (within a fair-use cap), eye contact, AI B-roll and, from Pro, dubbing in 29 languages. Creator costs $9.67/mo billed yearly ($20 monthly). Sound effects are added by hand, and the free plan exports 720p with a watermark.

ZapCap

Best for: a Submagic-style tool for less

ZapCap works much like Submagic: caption presets (one is named "Hormozi"), B-roll, silence removal, a clip maker and an API on Pro. Starter costs $8/mo billed yearly ($10 monthly) with the same limits as Submagic Starter: 15 videos a month, up to 2 minutes each. It has no eye contact correction, and sound effects are added by hand.

Descript

Descript

Best for: editing longer videos by editing text

Descript lets you edit a video by editing its transcript, in a desktop app for Mac and Windows or on the web. Hobbyist ($16/mo billed yearly) includes eye contact (paid in AI credits), AI dubbing in 30 languages and clip creation. It has no mobile app, and sound effects come from a library or a text prompt rather than being placed for you.

Should you switch from Submagic?

Stay with Submagic if your videos are under 2 minutes, you like its templates, and you rely on its social publishing or API, which StoryCut doesn’t have. Also stay if you fix eye contact on more than 10 videos a month: Submagic includes it in Pro ($23/mo billed yearly), while StoryCut Pro ($14/mo billed yearly) includes 10 a month and unlimited eye contact needs Business ($39/mo). Switch if you keep hitting the 2- or 5-minute cap, if you want clips from long videos without paying for an add-on, or if you want sound effects placed for you. The simplest test is to upload the same video to StoryCut’s free plan and compare it with your Submagic export before your next renewal date.
