Captions vs CapCut: the short answer

Verdict
CapCut is the better pick if you want to edit by hand: its full editor is free and works on every platform, including Android and Windows. Captions is the better pick for iPhone creators who want AI to do the work (AI Edit, eye contact, AI Zoom, dubbing with lip-sync, AI twins) and are fine paying in credits. Captions’ web and Android versions are much smaller than its iPhone app.
Captions price (2026)
Free: 60 to 200 credits for the life of the account. Basic $9.99/mo ($64.99/yr on iOS; sold in the app, not on the pricing page). Max $24.99/mo with 500 credits and 2 seats. Frontier $69.99/mo with 1,400 credits. Captions says its pricing page shows iOS prices.
CapCut price (2026)
The editor is free. Pro is $19.99/mo or $179.99/yr (about $15/mo) in the US after the 2026 price increase. The iOS app also lists a Standard plan at $9.99/mo. CapCut says prices vary by region, device and promotions.
Best for Captions
Solo creators who film talking videos on an iPhone and want AI editing, eye contact correction and lip-synced dubbing in one app.
Best for CapCut
Anyone who wants a free, full editor on any device, with templates and effects for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
A third option
StoryCut, a browser editor with plan limits instead of credits: captions start on upload, sound effects land on key words (Pro), and eye contact correction has 1 free try. Paid plans from $7/mo billed yearly. StoryCut publishes this page.

Why the platform matters more than the feature list

Most of Captions’ headline features live in its iPhone app. Captions’ own help center lists what the web app leaves out: standalone caption generation, AI dubbing, AI eye contact, AI Trim, AI Zoom, AI sound effects, AI music, AI twins and the manual timeline. On the web, captions come through AI Edit styles, which cost more credits, videos must be 4 to 60 seconds long and vertical, and projects are stored in your browser, so logging out or clearing the cache deletes them. On Android you get Captions Lite, and there is no Windows app.

CapCut runs its full editor on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and the web, with cloud storage on paid plans. A few of its AI tools, such as AI sound effects and eye contact, are documented for the mobile app. If you edit on a Windows PC or an Android phone, that difference alone usually decides it.

Which should you choose?

Choose Captions if you film on an iPhone, want AI to make most of the editing decisions, and need what CapCut doesn’t center on: one-tap AI Edit, eye contact from $9.99/mo, Lipdub dubbing and AI twins. Budget for credits, which are spent whether or not you export, and edit in the iPhone app if you want the full feature set.

Choose CapCut if you want a free editor, you use Android or Windows, or you like building each edit yourself with templates and effects. It takes longer per video, but you control every frame. Check the Pro price in your own account before paying, since it varies by region and device.

So, is Captions better than CapCut? For AI-assisted talking-head videos on an iPhone, yes. For free, hands-on editing on any device, CapCut is the stronger tool.

Where StoryCut fits

Disclosure: StoryCut publishes this comparison. StoryCut sits between the two: like Captions it does much of the work for you, and like CapCut it works on any computer or phone, in the browser rather than in an app. Captions start automatically when your upload finishes, in 49 languages, with 26 styles including 6 Hormozi-style presets. On Pro ($14/mo billed yearly), sound effects are placed on your key words, and magic zoom, silence removal, clean audio, AI music and voice dubbing in 33 languages are one click each. Plans have fixed limits instead of credits.

Eye contact correction (NVIDIA Maxine) runs in the browser, keeps your resolution, frame rate and audio, and works on its own, without captions. Every account gets 1 free correction; after that, 5 videos cost $9 one-time, or Pro includes 10 a month ($14/mo billed yearly, more than Captions Basic on iOS). StoryCut has no app, no manual timeline, no AI avatars and no lip-sync, and it is newer, with no third-party reviews yet.
